It was October by the time we reached Camogli, located on the west side of the peninsula of Portofino, Liguria, northern Italy. The days were still warm but it was not exactly swimming weather. Mischa didn’t take much convincing: it was her only opportunity to swim in the Mediterranean sea. It was the icing on the cake for Mischa.
Whereas the cherry on top for me was choosing a restaurant. It always is.

There’s not much open space or parkland in the small town of Camogli, south of Genoa, Italy. The town spills down the hillside, with steep one way streets to the sea; parking is a nightmare, and the town is packed on the weekend. It was surprising and delightful, therefore, to find a small open playground so close to the lido, with young lads enjoying a game of soccer on a busy Sunday afternoon.

It’s no secret. My muse is Italy, the country that inspires my language, cooking and reading. Below, the famous headland of Camogli, a small but very busy fishing town in the province of Genova, is one of those siren sights.
Camogli is a small but popular tourist town located on the west side of the peninsula of Portofino, on the Golfo Paradiso at the Riviera di Levante. The name means “house of wives” deriving from casa delle mogli.
One of the guide books suggested it was a small fishing village; this is definitely a misnomer. The town is small, but well touristed, being so close to Genoa, the harbour filled with prosperous pleasure craft. Once we managed to find a spot to park, a tricky business in Camogli, we happily joined in the busy evening passeggiata then read every menu along the lido, much to Mischa Bella’s hungry frustration.
