The Steampunk gallery and sculptures around the town of Oamaru, New Zealand make one feel jubilant. Set amidst Victorian streetscapes and along parks and playgrounds facing the old harbour, these joyful sculptures are another reason for visiting this amazing town.
What is steampunk you may ask?
“Steampunk is a quirky and fun genre of science fiction that features steam-powered technology. It is often set in an alternate, futuristic version of 19th century Victorian England.
The Steampunk future is driven by unusual steam-powered devices ā the āworld gone madā as Victorian people may have imagined it. Examples are machines like those in the writing of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, and in TV shows such as Dr. Who.
Oamaru is an ideal setting for Steampunk art and activities, given the wonderfully preserved and thriving Victorian buildings.”¹

Jubilant is this week’s prompt on the Daily Post, WordPress.
It is so interesting that you would write about Steampunk within weeks of my learning about it. The hotel we stayed at in the middle of ‘nowhere, Ohio’ was about to have a Steampunk convention only a couple of weeks after we left. I was so sorry to miss it after seeing some of the photos from last year. What a photographer’s paradise everyone in costume would be! We are definitely sold on the South Island, it just looks and sounds so interesting. Thank you Francesca!

That is amazing Ardys. I hadn’t heard of it either until I went to Oamaru. It would have been great to photograph that convention in Ohio. They have a steampunk festival in Oamaru too, in June, so looks like I missed out- though I imagine the town would be so cold then.

I remember those crazy sculptures on the fishy pub. I’ve been reading about the Steampunk movement since visiting Oamaru- it has quite a history.

I’m not much into sci-fi, with certain exceptions, of which Steampunk is one. Last year I read and enjoyed Shelley Adina’s YA novel series Magnificent Devices. It is indeed a fun & quirky genre as your pics show. How cool to visit a Steampunk town š

I’m really enjoying your NZ posts. I have a friend with a huge Steampunk tattoo so I must ask her if she knows that Omaru is Steampunk Central.
