Come to Flores with me and visit the enchanting, ramshackle town of Labuan Bajo where fishing fleets, ferries and yachts float about in a lipstick harbour. Take a long-tailed boat out to Kanawa island in the Komodo Archipelago and float about in the warm sea, observing manta rays, pygmy seahorse, clown fish, nudibranchs, blue-ringed octopus, giant clams, sponges and coral below.

It was- and so remote and exotic. Flores can be challenging too.

What relaxing scenes Francesca, but Iβm most fascinated by your new photo at the top – is it some sort of Roman reenactment society?

Haha, they are a couple of fake gladiators I found arguing in front of the Colosseum in Rome.

I love boats! Gorgeous photos, vibrant colors…I especially like the first one with the lights strung out above the ferry boat and twilight settling in on the harbor.

That ferry took all afternoon to load, with cars and thousands of locals. It is mainly the local means of getting around the islands of Indonesia, and often, a seat on the deck on top of your towel or sarong is all that you have for the trip.

Oh Francesca .. Gorgeous! we caught the ferry to Lombok too. Many years ago now! Did you get to the Gili islands! Loving your afloat! π

Yes, We went to the Gili islands in the 90s from Lombok. I have fond memories of them, but apparently things have really changed there. This time it was Flores which is across on the East near Timor. We didn’t catch that Ferry in the pic- just watched the locals line up all evening, with a gin and tonic in hand!
